Leto and Manny gathered close to me and together under the night sky we watched as Celyse and the guards disappeared into the forest, all except for one. He hung back, staying close to the house.

“What is he doing?” I asked.

Leto narrowed his eyes at the figure. “They have other plans for us. I must grab my things.” He dashed inside the house and Manny and I followed.

Manny panicked. “Other plans? Wh-wh-what does that mean?”

My mom’s ringtone sounded, sending Selena’s salsa beat cutting through the air in a surreal and terrifying way. If my mom was calling at three in the morning, then something serious was about to go down. I snatched my phone out of my back pocket and silenced the music.

“Oh, no,” Manny muttered. He pointed at the phone. “Bad. Very bad.”

“I know.” I turned my ringer off, then slipped the phone back in my rear pocket, my heart racing on overdrive.

Manny stood in front of me, chewing at his thumb. “Are you getting a witchy vibe?”

I was, all over, and it was intense.

He cut me off before I could answer. “You know what, don’t answer that. I already know.”

We turned our attention to the guy outside and watched as a tall and ominous figure cloaked in black emerged from the woods. I wondered if he was the same arrow-flinging guy from the car crash but couldn’t tell. He faced the house and held up his arms.

“What the holy hell,” Manny uttered.

The man looked like a freakin’ sorcerer or wizard, intent on killing his target. Namely us. Manny and I backed away from the window.

“Uh, Leto!” I shouted. “Better get over here!”

Leto dashed over with two duffel bags. He peered at the menacing figure standing outside in the moonlight.

“Never thought I would see him again.”

“You know that guy?” Manny asked.

“I do.” Leto spun around. “Follow me, quickly.”

Manny and I raced behind Leto through the living room and to the kitchen. The house shook. The windows shattered. Leto glanced at the ceiling, muttered under his breath, then reached for the back door. He twisted the knob, but the door didn’t budge. He set his bags down, then slammed his shoulder into the frame. It wouldn’t give.

He turned to face me and Manny. “We are in a dire predicament.”

“No, shit, Gandalf!” Manny exclaimed.

Angling in, I tried the knob to see if I could open it. It wouldn’t turn. “Now what?”

The house shook again. This time, wisps of dark smoke trickled into the kitchen from the front of the house and the stench of wood burning flooded the air.

“The house is on fire!” Manny yelled.

“Calm yourself, Manny,” Leto ordered.

Manny clamped his mouth shut, then nodded. But his eyes were still wide with fright.

“You,” Leto barked at me. “I need you to place your palms on the door and summon whatever power you have within you.”

He pressed his hands against the wall like he did when we heard the wolfbeasts our first night in the house. I joined him, pressing mine against the door.
